MOME Open presents:

Creative Approaches for City Data:

Unconventional Methods for Decoding Urban Landscapes

August  21-22, 2025

Data Vandals hosted a 2-day exhibition workshop at the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts in Budapest, Hungary, to create a vibrant exhibition in one of the city's oldest and largest parks.

In association with Budapest's District 12 Mayors' office, we collaborated with the participants to collect data on the importance of green spaces and climate change. The hands-on experience was amplified by presenting the data art projects in the Városmajor park and engaging the community in conversation.

The projects:

Data Vandals left this cute collection of rock dudes for people to record their memories of good times in the park.
This project showed three types of dog leash laws: LEFT: all dogs always on leash, CENTER: three zones,  RIGHT: no leashes at all. Participants voted by sticking dog bones to the sign.
Participants were urged to move the “beead” to show the months of active pollination.
Participants were asked what % of food depends on pollination.
This painting shows the levels of July rain for the last 5 years.
This map allowed the community to suggest where additional bathrooms should be located.
Participants were asked what the highest temperature possible for living creatures.
This chart asked people if they would grill (right) or boil (left) their meat (top) or vegetables (bottom). The colors represent by gender: green = female.
This project asked people what they would bring to a BBQ in the park. The 3 areas are what you would buy, what you would bring, and what you would borrow.
This map asks people what emotions they associate with various locations in the park.
Red: Joy | Blue: Calm | Yellow: Unknown | Green: “no go zone” (fear)
This project asks how people feel about different park features.
This floor chart asks where people have peed in the park - in a toilet, at home, or outdoors.

This project shows a collection of historic images and facts.
